Instead of asking for a meeting, offer the prospect something you have already built for them: a small tool loaded with their own data.
Mutiny, the Y Combinator-backed website personalisation company, built a one-to-one web page for each target marketing leader: addressed by name, introducing the product to them personally, and setting out the problems their company was likely to have. The page was the introduction in its cold email and LinkedIn outreach.
Co-founder and chief executive Jaleh Rezaei said it produced a demo rate of about 8% from completely cold prospects, half of them via LinkedIn, where email or LinkedIn alone each produced only a couple of percentage points (The SaaS Podcast, episode 240, 25 February 2020). The page was also a demo of Mutiny's own product, which flatters the result.
Agencies, consultancies and SaaS selling to companies of 10 to 200 people: anyone who can show value on a screen.
Reciprocity, proof of competence and curiosity in one message. AI coding tools now make it practical to build one small app per vertical (a tech-stack scanner, an audit, a profile builder) in a day and pre-fill it with each prospect's own data, so the email only has to ask permission to put it together. The cheaper version is the reverse lead magnet: offer to research and build something for them, instead of offering your PDF.
Self-reported. Mutiny's figures from its chief executive, Jaleh Rezaei (The SaaS Podcast, 25 February 2020).
Cost to test. A day to build the app with AI coding tools, plus the sending tools you already use.
Kill it if the first 200 prospects produce fewer demos than your ordinary cold email.
The result must be genuinely useful, or it is a gimmick. Generic "audits" are everywhere: the specificity is the play. Use only public data about the company, never personal data the prospect has not shared.
