The Reddit Presence

Become the expert voice in the subreddits where your buyers ask questions, and the name AI assistants quote.

The original

On 23 February 2009 Alan Schaaf, a student at Ohio University, posted to Reddit: "My Gift to Reddit: I created an image hosting service that doesn't suck. What do you think?" The post drew more than 2,100 upvotes and 670 comments (Know Your Meme), and Redditors adopted Imgur as the community's image host.

By late 2012 it was serving 3.6 billion pageviews and 56 million unique visitors a month, and was profitable without outside investment (TechCrunch, 11 January 2013).

Best for

Any business whose buyers research before they buy: SaaS, e-commerce, services and consumer brands. Strongest in categories with active subreddits.

Why it works

Reddit is the most cited domain in AI answers across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews (Peec, 30 million sources, March 2026), and 51% of B2B software buyers now start their research in an AI chatbot (G2, April 2026). A thread that ranks for a "best X" question is read by buyers and picked up by AI for years, so one good answer keeps working.

The share moves, though. Across more than 230,000 prompts, the share of ChatGPT responses citing Reddit fell from close to 60% in early August 2025 to around 10% by mid-September (Semrush, 10 November 2025). Treat Reddit as one source AI reads, not the only one.

How it runs

  1. Map the five to ten subreddits and the recurring questions where your category comes up: "best [category]", "[competitor] alternative", "anyone used".
  2. Build a real account with history. For the first month, answer questions without mentioning yourself.
  3. Answer in depth, with numbers and trade-offs. Disclose your affiliation when your product comes up, and recommend competitors when they fit.
  4. Find the threads that already rank on Google for your buying queries and add the best answer to them.
  5. Post one honest "what we learned" thread or AMA a quarter.
  6. Each month, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini your buyers' questions and log whether the thread, or you, appears.

Proof

Reported. Imgur's growth from TechCrunch (11 January 2013). Vendor. Peec's analysis of 30 million AI search sources ranks Reddit as the most cited domain (March 2026). G2's survey of 1,076 B2B software buyers found 51% start research in an AI chatbot (fielded March 2026, published April 2026). Semrush's tracking of ChatGPT citations (10 November 2025).

Cost to test, and when to stop

Cost to test. No media spend. About three hours a week of an expert's time for three months.

Kill it if after three months your answers earn no real upvotes and you do not appear in AI answers to your buying questions.

Watch-outs

Subreddits ban accounts that read as marketing, and users spot shills quickly. No upvote buying and no second accounts. It is slow: expect three to six months. Not for categories with no subreddit activity.
