The Review Engine

Ask for a review at the happiest moment, every time, and reply to every review in your own words.

The original

Michael Luca at Harvard Business School matched Seattle restaurants' revenue from Washington State tax records with their Yelp ratings. Because Yelp rounds ratings to the nearest half star, he could compare restaurants just either side of a rounding threshold. A one-star rise led to a 5 to 9% increase in revenue, an effect driven by independent restaurants, with none for chains (Luca, Harvard Business School working paper, revised March 2016).

A Berkeley study of 328 restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area found that moving from 3 to 3.5 stars raised the chance of selling out at prime dining times from 13% to 34% (Anderson and Magruder, Economic Journal, 2012). Both measure what a rating is worth, not the asking method itself, and Yelp's own guidelines discourage asking for reviews, so check each platform's rules.

Best for

Local businesses, e-commerce, services and software: anyone a buyer can look up.

Why it works

In BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US consumers (BrightLocal sells local SEO software), 41% always read reviews, up from 29% a year earlier. 85% are more likely to use a business after positive reviews, 74% want reviews from the last three months, and 80% are more likely to use a business that replies to all its reviews, while 50% are put off by templated replies (February 2026). Review sites also feed AI answers: G2 and Yelp sit in the ten most cited domains (Peec, March 2026).

How it runs

  1. Map the moment of delight, such as delivery, the first result or a thank-you, and trigger the ask there: a text or WhatsApp message with a direct link, or a QR card at the till.
  2. Ask everyone, in person where you can.
  3. Reply to every review within a week, in a human voice, with no templates.
  4. Fix the most common complaint each month.
  5. Put the best quotes on the site and in adverts.
  6. Track rating, volume and recency monthly. Recency decides.

Cost to test, and when to stop

Cost to test. Free, or a few dollars a month for a review request tool, plus an hour a week to reply.

Change course if after two months fewer than one customer in ten who is asked leaves a review: move the ask to a happier moment.

Watch-outs

Paying for reviews or faking them breaks platform rules and consumer law in many countries. Asking only happy customers (review gating) is against Google's rules. Replies written by AI read as templates.
