The original

Facebook opened its platform to outside developers in May 2007. Zynga, founded the month before, released its first Facebook game, Texas Hold 'Em Poker, that July, and built its business on Facebook's feeds, invitations and payments. FarmVille launched on 19 June 2009 and passed 11 million daily players within nine weeks (Zynga, August 2009).

Zynga's revenue went from $19.4 million in 2008 to $597.5 million in 2010, almost all of it through Facebook (Zynga S-1, 1 July 2011), and by 2011 it was about 12% of Facebook's own revenue (Facebook S-1, February 2012). It is the warning as well as the proof: Zynga's own filing listed its dependence on Facebook as a risk (Zynga S-1, 1 July 2011).

Best for

SaaS and apps with an API, and any product whose value can be delivered inside a chat: search, booking, data, generation.

Why it works

New platforms reward early entrants: Traction calls building on existing platforms one of the most overlooked channels, and Evernote grew by shipping on every new device at launch. ChatGPT opened its app directory to developer submissions in December 2025 (OpenAI). Anthropic's Connectors Directory serves claude.ai, Claude Desktop, mobile, Claude Code and Cowork from one catalogue, ranks listings on usage, and makes every listing eligible for in-chat Suggested Connectors when it is relevant to a user's task (Anthropic documentation, checked 31 October 2026).

How it runs

  1. Pick the one job your product does that someone would ask an assistant to do.
  2. Build an MCP server for Claude and an app with the Apps SDK for ChatGPT that does that one job well.
  3. Meet each directory's security, privacy and submission standards, then submit.
  4. Write the listing like a search result: the question it answers, in the user's words.
  5. Announce it to customers and in each platform's developer community.
  6. Watch usage in the developer dashboards each week. Usage drives ranking, so fix what stops people using it twice.

Proof

Verified. OpenAI's announcement that developers can submit apps to ChatGPT (17 December 2025). Anthropic's Connectors Directory documentation (checked 31 October 2026).

Cost to test, and when to stop

Cost to test. No media spend. A few weeks of a developer's time for one use case.

Kill it if 90 days after the listing goes live, usage is flat and no sign-ups trace back to it.

Watch-outs

Directory policies change, and a platform can build a popular use case itself. The engineering cost is real. Ranking follows usage, so a listing nobody uses sinks. Not for products that only make sense in their own interface.
