The Voice With Permission

Let a small team speak for the brand in public, in real time, without waiting for approval.

The original

Wendy's turned its X account, then Twitter, into a character: sarcastic, quick and willing to roast competitors, and customers who asked for it. On 6 April 2017 a teenager, Carter Wilkerson, asked how many retweets he needed for a year of free nuggets. Wendy's replied 18 million. #NuggsForCarter reached 3.42 million retweets, a record at the time (TechCrunch, 9 May 2017).

In 2018 the account gained about a million followers, social media mentions rose 113% and a diss-track mixtape earned 758 million earned media impressions (Restaurant Dive, 17 December 2018).

Best for

Consumer brands with a personality and a team that can write, and B2B companies in technology and finance, where X is still where the conversation happens.

Why it works

Speed and a recognisable voice are the only advantages a brand has in a real-time feed, and both depend on permission rather than budget. When the lights went out at the 2013 Super Bowl, Oreo posted "Power out? No problem." with an image reading "You can still dunk in the dark", and earned more than 15,000 retweets. The executive who approved it said the readiness behind it took two years to build (Digiday, 3 February 2017).

How it runs

  1. Write the voice down: what it jokes about and what it never touches.
  2. Name two or three people who can post without sign-off, and agree what must be escalated.
  3. Reply more than you post. The replies are where the voice lives.
  4. Watch your category in real time and be ready to react within the hour.
  5. Keep links out of the main post, because link posts are shown to far fewer people.
  6. Measure follower growth, mentions and branded search, and screenshot the best moments for other platforms.

Cost to test, and when to stop

Cost to test. No media spend. A small team's time for a quarter.

Kill it if after three months mentions and follower growth are flat.

Watch-outs

Brand reach on X is low, averaging 0.10% engagement by followers in 2026 (Socialinsider), so it pays only where your buyers still spend time there, such as technology, finance and Saudi Arabia. X's owner said in July 2026 that link posts had not been penalised for over a year, but PPC Land's analysis found they got 94% fewer views (30 July 2026). Roasting customers is a skill: one bad joke at the wrong person becomes the story.
